This policy sets out the principles that govern safe working across our gardening operations, including garden maintenance, landscaping, hedge and shrub care, turf management and seasonal works. Our aim is to reduce risks through planned controls, training and continuous improvement while delivering professional garden care.
Purpose and Commitment
The purpose of this policy is to define responsibilities and practical measures so that everyone engaged in our garden maintenance and horticultural services understands how hazards are managed. We will ensure resources are provided to implement safety measures, that safe systems of work are in place, and that risks are monitored. This policy is applicable to all service areas and job types performed by our team, both on client premises and on company property.
Scope
This health and safety policy applies to all employees, subcontractors and visitors involved in our gardening operations. It covers routine garden maintenance, tree and shrub work, use of powered equipment, handling of materials and chemicals, working at height, manual handling and vehicle operations. It does not attempt to list every specific legal obligation but follows general best practice for garden contractors and landscaping teams.Responsibilities
Management will ensure that suitable risk assessments and safe work procedures are in place, that staff are competent, and that necessary personal protective equipment is supplied and maintained. Managers will carry out regular site checks and ensure incidents are investigated. Employees are responsible for following procedures, using PPE, reporting hazards and cooperating with safety measures.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems
Before work begins, a site-specific risk assessment will be conducted to identify hazards such as uneven ground, buried services, power lines, pesticide use, and proximity to the public. Controls will be proportionate to the risk and may include exclusion zones, signage, tool guarding, and scheduling work to avoid busy periods. Safe working procedures will be documented and accessible to all staff.Training and Competence
All staff will receive induction training and task-related instruction. Where necessary, specialized training will be provided for drivers of mobile plant, chainsaw operatives, pesticide application and working at height. Records of training and competency assessments will be maintained. Regular refresher sessions will ensure skills remain up to date and that new techniques or equipment are understood.
PPE and Equipment
Gardeners Temple will supply and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as eye protection, gloves, high-visibility clothing, hearing protection and protective footwear. Tools and machinery will be subject to pre-use checks and routine maintenance. Faulty equipment must be reported and removed from service until repaired. Safe storage and transport of tools and machinery will be enforced to prevent accidental injuries.Hazardous Substances and Environmental Controls
